 HAPPY HOUR
(G. Thomas / Christina Carmel) 2014

Well I can picture mama pushing her broom
Just a little too hard through every room
Her diploma hung in the hall
Back then women couldn’t have it all
She looked so lost and far away
On that rainy Southern summer day
Thinking about that dream she had
But she couldn’t imagine a life without dad
And when he'd pull up
At five in his old pick up truck
She’d come alive
Because her man had arrived

And in the driveway they would meet
He’d plant a big kiss upon her cheek
And it was the happiest hour of her day
It was plain to see how she loved her man
In a way I could never understand
'Til I was old enough to know that side of life
Between a man and his wife

Dad whittled mom’s anniversary gift
While he told us kids about their very first kiss
And how they’d met back in Abilene
So poor all they had was the blue in their jeans
They fell hard and married young
Back then you know that’s how it was done
They always wanted a family
Even though it meant more mouths to feed
And their memories down the hall
Showed how they gave it all
A sense of pride
Because their love stayed alive

And in the driveway they would meet
He’d plant a big kiss upon her cheek
It was the happiest hour of the day
And I know that she really loved her man
In a way I could never understand
'Til I was old enough to see that side of life
Between a man and his wife

And in the driveway they would meet
He’s plant a big kiss upon her cheek
It was the happiest hour of the day
And I know that she really loved her man
In a way now that I understand
Cause when I look at you I see that side of life
Between a man and his wife
